Being part of the scheme you will also get access to technology experts, leading theatre professionals and the chance to work with one of our venue partners: Bristol Old Vic; mac, Birmingham; Contact, Man-chester; The Junction, Cambridge; Soho Theatre, London; and Lyric, Hammersmith.

Applications will be accepted until 30 April and the scheme will run from July – September 2010:

How do I apply?
Theatre Sandbox will launch with a series of workshops to provide more information, help develop ideas and answer questions.

Creative Technology Research Associate (one year fixed term).

Grade: 2 £27,000.

"Everyone at Watershed has a passion for doing a job properly. Often doing a job properly involves creativity, innovation and a lot of thought: being encouraged to do those things, and working with others who do too, every day, is what makes Watershed both a great place and a great place to work." Oliver Humpage, Watershed ICT Coordinator

The Role:
This one year research post will play a key role in developing collaborative, publicly-facing projects and ideas in The Pervasive Media Studio.

The role will provide residents and collaborators with technical inspiration, collaboration and support. It has a broad remit: sometimes you will be exploring cutting-edge research, sometimes you will be coding an artist's project, sometimes (but less so) you will be re-setting the router.

About you:
You will have the ability to understand and inspire, listen and communicate and then make brilliant ideas happen. You need to know your stuff and have a flexible, adventurous and collaborative approach to work.

About us:
The Studio is part of Watershed. We have a formal partnership with UWE's Digital Cultures Research Centre. We are a multi-disciplinary lab exploring and producing pervasive media content, applications and services. We work within a brilliant community of artists, creative companies, technologists and academics. Our projects include gaming, projections, location-based media, digital displays and new forms of performance. Some are commercial, some are cultural. We test our projects as early as possible and iterate. We have a great workspace, an open ethos and a can-do attitude.

This research associate post is supported by funding from the South West Regional Development Agency.

To apply
Visit our website to download the job description and application form:

An affordable cooking stove that generates electricity could transform lives in the world’s poorest communities. It burns biomass such as wood or dung and converts the heat produced into electricity.

Over two billion people have no access to electricity. Recent tests showed that a Score (Stove for Cooking, Refrigeration
and Electricity) stove could produce enough electricity to power lights and simultaneously charge a mobile phone (19.5W). The objective is to produce 100W per household.

The EPSRC-funded project is led by the University of Nottingham. Other partners include the University of Manchester, City University London, Queen Mary, University of London and the charity Practical Action.

Talk: 4th March, 6.30pm, Watershed.

Cities across the world are about to enter the next phase of development. A near invisible network of radio frequency identification tags (RFID) is being deployed on many consumer items. These chips can connect to the Internet in an instant, creating a global network of physical objects or the ‘internet of things’. Is this the ultimate convenience in supply-chain management, the ultimate tool in future surveillance, or the real enabler for a grassroot local new politics?

During this talk, Rob van Kranenburg will examine the impact these systems could have on our cities and wider societies; and what alternative technologies could safeguard privacy and empower citizens.

The talk will take place at 6.30pm, Thursday 4 March at Watershed. Book now at Watershed Box office or online here.

Rob van Kranenburg is an innovation and media theorist involved with negociability strategies of new technologies and artistic practice, predominantly ubicomp and RFID, the relationship between the formal and informal in cultural and economic policy, and the requirements for a sustainable cultural economy.

This is a DCRC event, supported by the Pervasive Media Studio and Watershed.

This conference will be a significant boost for the Open Source Software movement in the UK. Open Source Software is released with its source code, allowing organisations to modify and extend it to suit their requirements. It is created by communities which release it without licence fees, meaning that the initial and ongoing costs of ownership are reduced. Because of this, many businesses and public sector organisations are using Open Source Software to be more flexible and reduce their IT costs.

The YFM Group managed South West Ventures Fund (SWVF) has confirmed a further investment in Bristol-based ProVision Communications, a developer of world leading wireless high definition television (HDTV) technology. Click to read more >

The YFM Group managed South West Ventures Fund (SWVF) has confirmed a further investment in Bristol-based ProVision Communications, a developer of world leading wireless high definition television (HDTV) technology.

£1.0 million ($1.7m) has been invested by SWVF and private investors in this latest round of funding, which will help the company to expand the sales team and accelerate product development. This includes new software for use in PC’s as well as Android and iPhone mobile handsets.

ProVision has developed a unique technology that uses the same wireless network and video encoding technologies found in PCs and mobile phones to stream multiple live high definition TV signals to any room of the home.

The company’s send and receive technology will be sold to a diverse array of manufacturers and integrated into new set top boxes and HDTVs.

Using open standards, 802.11n Wi-Fi and H.264 video encoding, minimises hardware costs and enables users to stream HD video data throughout the home between TVs, laptops and mobile phones from different manufacturers.

Julian Dennard from YFM Group said: “ProVision is perfectly placed to meet the increasing demand for wireless products and technology which can allow people at home and work to access high definition TV in different rooms over a Wi-Fi network.

“This latest round of funding will enable the new management team to build on its long term product strategy to focus on extending the technology into a wide range of other consumer electronics products including set top boxes, PC’s, mobiles, Blu-ray players and camcorders.”

Steve Cliffe, CEO at ProVision commented: “The AXAR1500 launch received a very warm reception from those within the industry. A lot of interest has been registered from several blue-chip organisations and the additional funding will help us to meet our customer’s needs.”

In January, ProVision’s AXAR1500 was selected by the UKTI to highlight British innovation at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. One demonstration saw ProVision stream live video from the demo suit to the car park, 28 floors below – video: tinyurl.com/axar1500

Power-generating rubber films developed by Princeton University engineers could harness natural body movements such as breathing and walking to power pacemakers, mobile phones and other electronic devices.

The material, composed of ceramic nanoribbons embedded onto silicone rubber sheets, generates electricity when flexed and is highly efficient at converting mechanical energy to electrical energy. Shoes made of the material may one day harvest the pounding of walking and running to power mobile electrical devices. Placed against the lungs, sheets of the material could use breathing motions to power pacemakers, obviating the current need for surgical replacement of the batteries that power the devices.

Start date: 2nd Sept 2010
Location: Shoreditch, London
Theme: Secret underground London.

Have you ever wondered what secret tunnels and buildings are hidden under the cities streets?

Illumini Event 2010 will be held in an underground rustic location in East London, and promises to be an exciting and historical look into the history of the secret underground city. The old rustic subterranean dark labyrinth, with its many rooms, alleyways and cells, will be transformed into several areas of historical underground London, eg: world war bunkers, disused station, crypts, historical water ways and many more, long forgotten hidden secrets of London. During the event there will be workshops and talks about secrets that are hidden in London’s underground.

The venue for the event, will be divided into zones. Each zone will represent a special hidden underground London location. Artists will transform their space to take the viewer back in time, recreating their chosen underground location, that inspires them. Then using their individual spaces as a platform, to exhibit their illuminating art work.

Illumini Event Sep 2008, attracted over 3,000 people on its opening night and 7,145 guests during its two weeks. Artists, from professionals to students, gained commissions, sales and major press coverage and interviews through Illumini. We take promotion very seriously and have a great track record with our featured artists.
