'Bringing together the arts, technology and social sciences has given us an opportunity to explore how emerging mobile communication technologies can be used outside their original purpose. The work has been inspirational and thought provoking and its influence will extend further than the current project.'

The maturing field of pervasive computing promises unique applications that exploit powerful new mobile devices and wireless networks, using sensing capabilities and smart objects (devices that know where the user is, what or who the user is close to, its heart rate etc) to embed and trigger media within the physical world.

Bringing together leading technology, artistic and media talent, Media Sandbox will offer research support to six groups of digital media SMEs and industry partners to explore new content, products, services or methods of interaction.

The scheme, run by iShed, South West Screen and Futurelab, is currently recruiting industry partners from the IT and Communications sectors to act as consortia members, technology provider and/or adviser/mentors.

Participation offers:
• Access to creatives to develop new proof of concept products and services
• Real-world test bed to explore the potential uses and impact of new technologies
• Exposure to new possibilities/perspectives to stimulate R&D direction
• Inclusion in national PR campaign
• Staff Development/community involvement

Full details of how to apply to the scheme will be published Mid-October.
