The online video games market is set to become one of the big drivers of telecommunications and IT services growth in the coming years, according to a new report by KPMG entitled The video games market in China: Moving online.
Video games are already one of the big drivers of the entertainment industry, and are poised to have an even wider impact, as gaming platforms continue to benefit from convergence with other forms of communication and media.
This is particularly evident in China, where the growth in online game subscribers is now paralleling the growth in the Internet and mobile subscriber markets. This is producing a profound set of challenges as well as opportunities as the industry struggles to find business models that work appropriately across the converging entertainment and communications sectors.
The new KPMG report, produced in conjunction with the Telecoms Research Project Corporate (TRPC) in Hong Kong and Singapore, considers the implications of the move online, in terms of business models, revenue generation and content development.
